This was the year of the Stewart-Tyrrell double-act. But it wasn’t as clear-cut at the start of the season. Ferrari was still the team to beat, and the brute force of the V-12 engine threatened to destroy everything in its wake. Ken Tyrrell secretly developed his own car during previous (1970) season, heavily inspired by Matra MS80. After Jochen Rindt’s death the previous year, Lotus had a troubled season with  young and inexperienced drivers, so Jackie Stewart and Tyrrell took both titles. Jo Siffert and Pedro Rodriguez lost their lives racing in 1971.
